Last week, Ethical Culture students in 2nd-5th Grades performed in their annual dance concerts led by Ms. Ethel Calhoun. This year’s program theme explored “joy” in all forms. Ms. Ethel — a beloved member of the extended ECFS community who leads the dance concerts each year — explained that she hoped students would learn to both dance “in joy” and “enjoy dance.”
At first, many students were hesitant to dance in front of others. However, after meaningful time spent with Ms. Ethel, they gained confidence and ultimately found value in the freedom of movement and expression.
Before each performance, students shared what dance has meant to them. Several students emphasized that they feel most themselves while dancing; others celebrated the connection they’ve formed with their peers through dance. According to Ms. Ethel, “if you aren’t dancing, you aren’t living.”
